Optimise a Website For Another Country Or Region

Problems arise for any website developer who wants to develop a website to target the US market while located in another country. The same problems arise for anybody based in the US who wants to target a market overseas.

When you connect to the Internet your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will allocate an IP address which identifies your computer and the country it is in. This is why, if you have a laptop abroad some websites will appear in the language of the country you are in which can be an annoyance.

An issue of more relevance to website developers who wish to optimise for Google search engine traffic is that Google will serve up results slanted to the country you are in. Even if you select to search the Web rather than the local region your results will still be slanted towards the local region. AdSense Ads and Pay per Click ads will also be region based. This can make it difficult to see your competition in your target Country

To see Google results say in the USA while having a Computer and IP address in another country Select Advanced Search. Go to “Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more” After expanding this go to Region and select United States from the list. The search will show the natural search results and PPC ads as if the search had been made in the USA. However if you open up a Website it will show any regional based content such as AdSense Ads based on your local IP address.

Another useful tool provided by Google is the AdWords Ad Targeting Keyword Tool. This allows you to select a Country or region of a country and choose a keyword and see the natural search results and PPC ads for that location.

The ultimate solution if you do a lot of this sort of work is to browse using a proxy server so you can choose an IP address of your target country. There are problems with this. Free Proxies are very prone to being frustratingly slow and there are worries about security as all your web traffic such as logins could be viewed by the owners of the proxy. The better way is to choose a well known paid for Proxy.

I am based in the UK developing Niche AdSense Websites targeting the US market. My solution was to use FoxyProxy. This is a Firefox add-on which manages Proxy Servers allowing surfing with a Proxy to be quickly turned on and off. The add-on is free for the basic and standard versions. I have also used their paid Proxy Server for the US which so far has been pretty fast.

When optimising for another market choose a relevant local domain name extension. For example.com or.org for the US or.co.uk for the UK. If you are looking for a world market.com is always best or otherwise.org.

If you want to target the market of a particular country always choose a web hosting company having its servers in that country. This can make a big difference to Google search results.

WordPress Admin Can’t Login – 6 Steps To Regain Access To WP’s Admin Dashboard (2018)

The WordPress admin area works in exactly the same way as the other parts of the system – through a login system (“/wp-admin”), you’re able to gain access to the backend dashboard, through which you’re able to add posts etc.

Whilst there are a number of potential causes of the problem, they’re all relatively simple to fix.

The most important point to make is that your system *may* have been infected with malware. I’ve experienced this issue before – hackers inject code into your WordPress system in the hope that it will distribute fake referral traffic for them.

If you have ANY malware issue with WordPress, you’ll need to get a technician to look at it. When it happened to us, our sites kept getting attacked and we had to move hosts in the end.

Obviously, malware is not going to be high on the list – the likely problem you have is either a plugin is preventing your login, or some other issue has prevented WordPress from authenticating you.

Causes

As mentioned, there are several common causes which typically lead the admin area to not work:

  • Bad update prevented WordPress from updating its core files
  • Certain plugins are preventing the login from occurring
  • You’ve set your app to https:// and are continually experiencing a redirect loop
  • Your system may have had its files changed on the server
  • WordPress may have become infected with malware

The most important thing to note is that WordPress is built with PHP.

PHP is a scripting language which provides rudimentary “dynamic” functionality to Internet centric applications, allowing for the likes of dynamic pages, login/logoff functionality and more.

Whilst PHP has existed for many decades, and is supported by the majority of hosting providers, there are a number of instances where its applications may not run properly.

It’s likely the case that your WordPress installation is experiencing this issue, although there are a number of other problems (hosting/malware/coding issues etc) which be causing it, too.

To fix the problem, there are 6 “steps” you can take…

Solution

1. Clear Browser Cache

The first step is to clear your browser’s cache.

The “cache” of your browser basically stores websites, login information etc.

It exists to give your browser the ability to “save” the relevant files which allow it to load files/websites faster. You’d be surprised at how crucial it actually it.

It *can* be the case that the admin panel of WordPress hasn’t had its cache updated. Whilst a relatively rare issue, still can cause the login issue to occur:

  • Chrome
  • Click on the top “vertical dots” menu at the top right of the Chrome Window
  • From the drop-down, select “Settings”
  • Click on “Advanced” (you’ll have to scroll down)
  • In the “Privacy and Security” section, select “Clear Browsing Data”
  • Check every box and make sure “All Time” is selected
  • Click “Clear Data” (blue box)
  • Let it clean the cache
  • Firefox
  • Click on the “Horizontal Lines” menu at the top right of the screen
  • Select “Options”
  • Select “Privacy” (left sidebar)
  • Click “Clear Your Recent History”
  • Select all and ensure that “Everything” is selected
  • Click “Clear Now”
  • Let it clean the cache
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Click on the “dots” menu at the top right of the Window
  • From the drop down, select “Settings”
  • Scroll down to “Clear Browsing Data”
  • Click the “Choose what to clear” button
  • Select all available options and click “Clear”
  • Let it clean the cache

This won’t solve the error, but should ensure that your browsers are not causing any further issues.

2. Gain Access To CPanel

The next step is to gain access to CPanel (or the equivalent control panel for your hosting).

EVERY WordPress has to be hosted somewhere; the way in which you are able to manage the various resources / server is dependent on which type of control panel your host may be running.

The point is that you need access to the files of your system.

With CPanel, this is done with “File Manager”; it may differ depending on the type of hosting you’re using…

  • Log into your hosting provider
  • Browse to the control panel and look for any way you can access the “File Manager” of your system

If you cannot access the file manager, you need to talk to your host – or – gain access via FTP.

If you want to use FTP, you’ll need to do the following:

  • Download an FTP application (FileZilla was the one I used to use)
  • Once downloaded, run the application
  • Into the “IP” / “Address” box, type “ftp.yourdomain.com” (or whatever the FTP address is – your host will be able to tell you about it)
  • Into the “username” & “password” boxes, you’ll need to type your FTP user details (again, your host can help if this is not something you know)

Once you gain access to the files of your system, you’ll be able to then start working on a fix.

3. Disable Plugins (Rename Folder)

Once you’ve gained access to the files, you then need to rename the “plugins” folder.

Renaming this folder gives you the ability to essentially disable any of the plugins that WordPress may be running. Obviously, this may cause temporary issues – but should remove this potential issue from the equation:

  • Click into the “WordPress” installation folder (you can tell by the presence of “wp-includes” etc inside it).
  • When you find the WordPress folder, browse to “wp-content”
  • Inside this folder, you’ll find the “plugins” folder
  • Rename the folder to something like “plugins_bk”
  • Go back to your web browser and attempt to log into your WordPress installation again

If it works, you should re-download each plugin and try enabling each one until you find the cause of the problem.

If it doesn’t work, you need to try fixing some of the core settings of the WordPress system.

4. Change Admin Password In DB

The WordPress system – as mentioned – is built on PHP.

The beauty of the system lies in how it uses a database to store the various information / content for your site.

To this end, if you are having issues loggin in, you may need to change some of the settings inside the database.

Any legitimate host should provide access to database management portal. You can use it with the following:

  • Click into the “control panel” for your hosting
  • Look around for the “database” section (this varies from host to host)
  • In most hosting providers, you’ll have “PHPMyAdmin” – click this (it allows you to manage your WordPress database)
  • From the database which shows, select the one for your WordPress installation
  • Browse to the “users” table
  • Select your admin account
  • In the “password” field, type a new password
  • In the “type” field, select MD5
  • Click “OK” to save the entry
  • Try logging back into your WP installation

As mentioned, this is not an exhaustive list (each host handles this differently).

If you have trouble following the above steps, you’ll be best talking to your hosting provider OR a company able to provide support.

5. Make Sure You’re Not In An HTTPS Redirect Loop

One of the main causes of the admin area “lockout” problem in WordPress is what’s known as an “HTTPS redirect loop”.

This is basically where you will set your site to use HTTPS, and it will have another redirect facility preventing you from accessing the admin area.

To further this, the way that cookies work is specific to the domain you’re accessing. HTTP & HTTPS are considered entirely different entities, and thus logging into one variant does not permit you to access the other.

The fix for this is as follows:

  • In the WordPress Database (as mentioned din Step 4), click on the “wp_options” table
  • Look for the “siteurl” option
  • Make sure it’s “http://… “
  • Look for any other references to the site’s domain / protocol
  • Ensure the “http://… ” reference with any that you find
  • Clear your browser’s cache (step 1)
  • Try logging into your system again

If this doesn’t work, it may be worth replacing your WordPress core files.

6. Replace WordPress Core Files

The next step is to replace the WordPress core files in your system.

To do this, we first need to ensure the “config” file for WP (“wp-config.php”) is kept secure:

  • Access the files for WordPress again (from Step #2)
  • Browse to your WordPress installation’s base folder
  • Look for “wp-config.php”
  • Download it to your PC
  • After doing this, click onto your preferred search engine + look for “WordPress download”
  • You should find the “WordPress.org” website
  • Click the “download” button (blue)
  • Once saved, you’ll need to unzip the files into a folder on your system
  • Click back onto your hosting file manager
  • Select the “WordPress” folder and rename it (something like “wp_bk” or similar)
  • From here, create a new “WordPress” folder (with the same name as the original)
  • Into this folder, upload all the new WordPress files you downloaded from WP’s site
  • Copy wp-config.php into the base folder (it should overwrite what’s already there)
  • Try accessing the site

If there are any issues with this, you’ll be able to simply rename your old WP directory back to its original name.

If you still are unable to resolve the problem, you will need to get some more specific support. There are actually several ways you can do this – either with the likes of online communities (such as Microsoft Answers or SuperUser), or from a committed source of support (your hosting account etc). Fiverr is also a good place to find people who’ll help resolve WordPress problems (but these guys will definitely need paying).

The point is that WordPress is generally quite a flexible platform, and the problem of not being able to access the admin area for your application is certainly not as unique as you may imagine. To this end, it will do your site justice to – perhaps – get a “checkup” from a WordPress company, who will be able to provide you with a rundown of what might be working well, and what may not. They should also be able to address the faulty admin area.

Originally, WordPress only offered the ability to create Posts – a term that is short for Blog Posts. Posts are content items that are time-specific and, when they are created, they have the current time and date attached to them. Creating a new Post causes two things to happen:

  • An individual web page is created with the content of your post
  • Your post is added to a single page that collects together each individual post

This is perhaps clearer as an example – let’s imagine you have a blog section on your website, at yourdomain.com/blog. When you publish a new blog post, a single page will be created – for example, this could be yourdomain.com/blog/my-post-name. But, at the same time, your blog post will be added to the central page at yourdomain.com/blog, giving your visitors the chance to see all of your most recent posts in one convenient place.

Posts are also added to your website’s RSS feed – more on that in our next article on advanced WordPress tips. Pages, on the other hand, are static items that do not have a date attached to them. They are the pages of your website that stand alone, offering general information about your business.

Phishing Attacks

Phishing is a type of social engineering attack often used to steal user data, including login credentials and credit card numbers. It occurs when an attacker, masquerading as a trusted entity, dupes a victim into opening an email, instant message, or text message. The recipient is then tricked into clicking a malicious link, which can lead to the installation of malware, the freezing of the system as part of a ransomware attack or the revealing of sensitive information. This article will talk about the types of phishing techniques and the prevention.

Phishing techniques

Here’s a brief look at five common phishing threats that often arise in enterprise settings. Each example features “Bob,” a mid-level employee in the finance department who is trying to get through his busy day and respond to hundreds of emails.

  1. Breach of Trust – Bob gets an email from what he thinks is his bank asking him to confirm a wire transfer. The email takes him to a link that looks like his bank’s website but it is actually a “spoofed” but identical copy of his bank’s website. When he gets to the page, he entered his credential but nothing happened. Too late, Bob just gave his bank password to a cybercriminal.
  2. False Lottery – Bob gets an email saying he’s won a prize from a sweepstakes. Normally, Bob is too savvy to fall for this trick. However, this email comes from his boss, Joe, and references a charity that they both support. He clicks, and ends up at a bogus page that loads malware.
  3. Data Update – Bob gets an email from Joe telling him to take a look at a document that is attached. The document contains malware. Bob may not even realize what has happened. He looks at the document, which seems normal. The resulting malware might log his keystrokes for months, compromise the entire network, and lead to massive security breaches throughout the organization.
  4. Sentimental Abuse – Bob gets an email from someone claiming to be Joe’s brother-in-law. He’s suffering from cancer and has had his insurance cancelled. He asks Bob to donate to help him recover from his illness. Bob clicks on the link and is taken to a bogus charity site. The site could host malware or just steal Bob’s credit card information via a bogus “online donation”.
  5. Impersonation – Bob gets an email from his boss Joe, who says that he needs money wired to a known vendor as pre-payment for an emergency job. Can Bob wire them the money right away? It seems fairly routine. Bob wires the money to the account requested. The money is untraceable and never seen again.

Prevent Phishing Attacks

  1. Keep Informed About Phishing Techniques – New phishing scams are being developed all the time. Without staying on top of these new phishing techniques, you could inadvertently fall prey to one. Keep your eyes peeled for news about new phishing scams. By finding out about them as early as possible, you will be at much lower risk of getting snared by one. For IT administrators, ongoing security awareness training and simulated phishing for all users is highly recommended in keeping security top of mind throughout the organization.
  2. Think Before You Click! – It’s fine to click on links when you’re on trusted sites. Clicking on links that appear in random emails and instant messages, however, isn’t such a smart move. Hover over links that you are unsure of before clicking on them. Do they lead where they are supposed to lead? A phishing email may claim to be from a legitimate company and when you click the link to the website, it may look exactly like the real website. The email may ask you to fill in the information but the email may not contain your name. Most phishing emails will start with “Dear Customer” so you should be alert when you come across these emails. When in doubt, go directly to the source rather than clicking a potentially dangerous link.
  3. Install an Anti-Phishing Toolbar – Most popular Internet browsers can be customized with anti-phishing toolbars. Such toolbars run quick checks on the sites that you are visiting and compare them to lists of known phishing sites. If you stumble upon a malicious site, the toolbar will alert you about it. This is just one more layer of protection against phishing scams, and it is completely free.
  4. Verify a Site’s Security – It’s natural to be a little wary about supplying sensitive financial information online. As long as you are on a secure website, however, you shouldn’t run into any trouble. Before submitting any information, make sure the site’s URL begins with “https” and there should be a closed lock icon near the address bar. Check for the site’s security certificate as well. If you get a message stating a certain website may contain malicious files, do not open the website. Never download files from suspicious emails or websites. Even search engines may show certain links which may lead users to a phishing webpage which offers low cost products. If the user makes purchases at such a website, the credit card details will be accessed by cybercriminals.
  5. Check Your Online Accounts Regularly – If you don’t visit an online account for a while, someone could be having a field day with it. Even if you don’t technically need to, check in with each of your online accounts on a regular basis. Get into the habit of changing your passwords regularly too. To prevent bank phishing and credit card phishing scams, you should personally check your statements regularly. Get monthly statements for your financial accounts and check each and every entry carefully to ensure no fraudulent transactions have been made without your knowledge.
  6. Keep Your Browser Up to Date – Security patches are released for popular browsers all the time. They are released in response to the security loopholes that phishers and other hackers inevitably discover and exploit. If you typically ignore messages about updating your browsers, stop. Special signatures that are included with antivirus software guard against known technology workarounds and loopholes. Just be sure to keep your software up to date. New definitions are added all the time because new scams are also being dreamed up all the time. Anti-spyware and firewall settings should be used to prevent phishing attacks and users should update the programs regularly. Firewall protection prevents access to malicious files by blocking the attacks. Antivirus software scans every file which comes through the Internet to your computer. It helps to prevent damage to your system.

Among the three brands I’ve mentioned, all seem to be the market leaders in their specialty of seal verification, and each having more than a decade of experience. Many websites and organizations can even attest to the quality of services they provide. Therefore I can say that they are all reputable brands in their own right.

However let’s go further to the deal breaker- affordability! TRUSTe offers no less than privacy seals and its costs even more than Trust Guard’s. You can save hundreds of dollars on Trust Guard, plus you can even combine PCI scanning with a Privacy seal- a combination that will also cost less than privacy seal alone by TRUSTe.

Virtual Private Servers – The Basics

A virtual private server can be described as the next step from shared web-hosting on the way to your own dedicated server. With server hardware becoming increasingly powerful (and affordable) in terms of CPU performance and memory, virtualisation is now playing a key role in the web-hosting industry. As a website owner, a virtual private server gives you many of the advantages a dedicated server offers, but at a fraction of the latter’s cost.

What are the key benchmarks of a virtual private server:

  • physical memory;
  • disk space;
  • CPU allocation;
  • bandwidth;
  • operating system;

Physical memory

Physical memory (RAM) determines how many applications you can run on your VPS at the same time, and how many users can access these applications at the same time. This usually translates into “how many users can I have on my website without the site slowing down?”. Naturally, the more memory, the better. Keep in mind, however, that most virtual private server plans offer memory in the 512MB to 4096MB range. Anything below that range will not really let you do much except maybe run a proxy or a domain name server. Anything above, and you are well advised to consider moving to a dedicated server, not only because 4GB of memory will be rather expensive when allocated to a VPS, but also because a dedicated server still offers more performance than a VPS given the same specifications, and if your VPS already consumes 4GB of memory, the scales might begin to tip in favour of a dedicated server.

Disk space

Most VPS deals offer anything between 5 to 40GB of disk space. Unless you plan to host a lot of large files (such as high resolution images, or media files), this space allocation should be sufficient. Keep in mind that more space will eventually become more expensive on a VPS plan than with a dedicated server, just like with memory.

CPU allocation

Another key factor is the way CPU time is being allocated to your VPS. There are many different models, but all of them have one important caveat in common: make sure you enquire about the actual CPU being used in your VPS node. It makes a big difference whether your node is running an E3-1230 or an old P4! Below is a quick summary of the most common CPU allocation plans:

  1. A guaranteed cores plan gives you full control over the specified number of cores of the host’s CPU. While this method gives you the most in terms of CPU performance compared to other allocations, it is also the most expensive one since a large portion of a physical CPU’s computing time is reserved for you alone, whether you actually need it or not.
  2. MHz/GHz allocation guarantees you a certain amount of permanent CPU performance in terms of the CPU’s clock rate.
  3. Number of cores / fair share: this method gives you a certain number of cores of the physical CPU of your VPS node. If your VPS plan says “2 cores fair share” it means that you will be able to use 2 cores of the physical CPU for your VPS, and that you are allowed to use these two in such a way that you do not pose a problem for other clients on the same node also making use of these 2 cores. The exact definition of “fair share” depends on the provider you are with, so do make sure you read the small print.
  4. vCPU: this allocation is a mix of (2.) and (3.) – it might feature allocations such as “4 cores at 800MHz”, etc. Again, keep in mind to ask which kind of CPU is being used in your VPS node.

Bandwidth

Most VPS offer less bandwidth or traffic than dedicated servers and are on a (sometimes shared) 100mbit/s connection, with some providers offering gbit/s as well, either by default or via an upgrade. It is tempting to get as much as bandwidth allocation as possible, but remember that anything too extreme is most likely just sales tactics. If you know how much traffic you will be using, purchase just as much as you need plus your growth estimate to avoid unnecessary costs.

Operating system

Most VPS will be running any of the typical flavours of Linux, such as CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. You are not limited to using Linux, however. Most providers will offer Windows based virtual private servers as well. These will, however, often come with additional licence costs.

Summary

The advantage of a VPS is its compactness – you can pretty much do whatever you could also do with a dedicated physical machine, but nevertheless enjoy the much lower cost of a VPS compared to paying for an entire server. The disadvantages of virtual private servers lie in their contention ratio and scalability.

The more customers hosted on a single physical machine, the more you will face increasing rivalry for a machine’s resources between the guest systems, such as I/O, memory, or CPU power. Scalability is another issue – you cannot scale up a VPS without ends. The current hardware of everyday’s high performing Intel or AMD architecture cannot be scaled ad infinitum, and a site requiring resources that were usually only served by dedicated servers a few years ago might even benefit from the additional performance (albeit at higher cost) from a dedicated machine with the same general specs such as CPU, memory, and disk space.
