Do I actually need a VPN?
If you regularly work on public Wi-Fi — cafés, hotels, airports, coworking — it is a genuine, specific benefit: nobody else on that network can read your traffic. At home on your own connection, the case is much weaker, and honest advice is that it matters less than people are usually told.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. It hides your traffic from the network you are on and your IP from the sites you visit. It does nothing about being logged into accounts, browser fingerprinting, or cookies. It is a privacy tool, not an invisibility cloak.
Will it slow my connection down?
Slightly, because traffic is encrypted and routed via another server. On a modern connection and a nearby server the difference is usually not noticeable. Connecting to a server on the other side of the world will be.
Can I use it on more than one device?
Yes — a single subscription covers several devices simultaneously, which is generally why people buy one rather than protecting only a laptop.
Does this replace antivirus?
No. A VPN protects data in transit. It does nothing about a file you download and run, or a compromised device. Threat protection blocks some known-bad destinations, but that is a supplement to endpoint security rather than a replacement for it.
